Hair loss in women: causes & treatments

Here’s an interesting statistic: nearly 70 percent of all women experience hair loss at one point in their life. But how, you may be asking, could this be? After all, doesn’t hair loss only happen to men?

The truth is that while common perception has led to the thought that men are the only ones who experience hair loss, the truth is far different.

Perhaps it’s because we only see advertisements in which men’s hair is falling out all over the place. Or maybe it’s because women typically just don’t go completely bald, so that ultimately hair loss in women doesn’t get noticed as much.

Either way, the truth is that the vast majority of women face hair loss. Whether it’s bald patches here and there after beginning hormonal supplements, or a general and inexplicable thinness spreading throughout your scalp, you are probably dealing with some form of female hair loss? and chances are, it’s not that fun.

But what does it mean to have hair loss if you are a woman? First off, it is important to understand that with both men and women, there are numerous diseases or lifestyles that can result in the loss of hair.

These vary between the side effects of drugs to hormonal changes caused by illness (hyperthyroidism) stress, or supplements (in women, the birth control pill sometimes causes this). Other causes include autoimmune disorders, fungal infections or even highly-aggressive hairdressing techniques.

One of the most common causes of hair loss in women, however, is hereditary pattern baldness. This may come as a surprise, considering that frequent use of the term “male pattern baldness” has often led to the perception that it would be abnormal for a woman to experience this type of balding.

And true enough, hereditary pattern baldness in women manifests itself a lot differently from that of male pattern baldness. Whereas men experience a receding hair line in combination with the fazing out of hair at the top of the head, women typically only experience thinned out hair at the top of the head.

Female pattern hair loss is not known to affect the front of the scalp, and even then hair loss in women seldom leads to complete baldness, making it a much less noticeable condition despite the fact that it is so common.

Yet considering the frequency with which this condition occurs, it is important to point out a few simple facts about loss of hair in females. First of all, opposed to contrary belief, this condition is passed on through both parents, not just the father or the mother. Secondly, while losing hair could be the symptom of a hormonal imbalance, it is likely not the case if there are no other symptoms (i.e. irregular menstruation, acne, or other signs).
